SUMMER is just around the corner, and millions of Americans nationwide are kicking off the season a few weeks ahead of schedule.

Memorial Day 2024 is the unofficial start of summer, and the long weekend means plenty of time to shop until you drop – but not all retailers are opening their doors this holiday weekend.

Is Safeway open on Memorial Day 2024?

Most major businesses, including nationwide and regional grocery stores and supermarket chains, will be open this Memorial Day 2024.

That includes grocery stores like Safeway, which will be keeping their doors open on the West Coast and in the Mid-Atlantic region.

However, there is one small exception to Safeway stores remaining open.

Customers are encouraged to check their local store ahead of time if they plan to use their store's pharmacy, as not all pharmacy locations will be open.

Some may be closed for the entire day, while others will be operating only for a few hours, likely from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

Safeway's order ahead service, which allows customers to place orders online for pickup and delivery, may also be impacted by the holiday weekend.

Not all stores offer the service in the first place, though those that do may also have limited or reduced hours.

Still, the majority of Safeway locations will be open, and offering deals on Memorial Day staples, like grilling favorites, produce, snacks, and desserts.

Safeway's regular opening and closing times vary slightly by location, though most stores will be open between 6 and 8 am, until 10 or 11 pm.

Does Safeway close for any holidays?

Safeway's popularity makes it difficult for the chain to close its doors, even on rare occasions.

Safeway's loyal customers are often shocked when the store chooses to close a few hours early.

Some shoppers even get annoyed when their grocery shopping routine has to change because of a holiday.

Thankfully, Safeway tends to only close its doors once a year, on Christmas Day, December 25.

The chain does, however, change its hours on a few more occasions throughout the year.

Safeway usually closes its doors early – think by 6 or 8 pm at the latest – on a few select holidays, including Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve.

The store also shuts its doors no later than 8 pm on New Year's Eve, allowing employees to ring in the New Year with their loved ones.

Other than those few days a year, customers can rely on the store's regular business hours.

That means on most holidays, including summer favorites like the 4th of July and Labor Day, Safeway locations are open for business as usual.

When was Safeway founded?

Safeway was founded in 1915 by M.B. Skaggs, a man from American Falls, Idaho who bought a small grocery store from his father.

By 1926, the single store had expanded to 428 Skaggs stores across 10 states.

He later merged his company with 322 Selig stores, and incorporated the two brands as Safeway, Inc.

The name initially emerged as a result of the store's "cash and carry" policy, allowing customers a "safe way" to purchase groceries.

Rather than racking up credit, as most grocers allowed, the store only allowed families to purchase what they could pay for up front, in cash.

In the 1930's, Safeway revolutionized grocery shopping, introducing "modern" concepts like:

• Selling select items, like produce and meats, by the pound
• Using nutritional labeling on products
• Adding "Sell By" dates to perishables
• Creating parking lots next to many of its stores

In 2015, Safeway was acquired by private equity investors, including Cerberus Capital Management.

Today, Safeway is a subsidiary of Albertsons, another popular supermarket chain.
