The world lost a beautiful, brave, bright light on Friday, June 7, 2024 when Jason Powell Mumme, 48 years old, peacefully left his earthly body surrounded by family. Jason was born in Dallas, Texas on May 14, 1976 to Marvin and Linda Mumme. He was the youngest of four children, always full of laughter and mischief during his younger years. Spending his first year in Texas, Jason’s family relocated to Fort Smith, Arkansas where he spent the remainder of his childhood years and where he returned later in life. Jason was a very social human with many who knew and loved him, those who knew him well knew that one of his biggest buddies was his Golden Retriever, Max. Jason was a graduate of Southside High School where he served as Vice President of his senior class, in Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas, where he earned a degree in finance. Jason was an avid golfer who also loved flyfishing, water and snow skiing and hunting, usually on memory-making trips with his Dad. He grew up “on the water”, traveling frequently to numerous lakes in Arkansas and his favorite, Lake Travis in Austin, always getting in a round on a slalom ski. After graduating from college, Jason moved to Austin where he worked for Broadwing Communications and was able to spend many weekends at the lake he loved. Jason also enjoyed cooking, especially when he could gather his friends and family for food and fellowship. Living in Austin, he developed an appreciation for music of all kinds, but top of his list was old country which he continued to listen to and sing for years.

During his young adult years, Jason was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and so began a journey of learning to live with both loss and joy. As his physical health declined over the years, he did endure more loss than most at his young age. Yet his faith continued to grow, exhibited in his grace and generosity. Jason truly did have a heart like David. He inspired many with his daily courage and his continued love and concern for others despite the grief he experienced. Jason would routinely share his motto, “Keep it simple”, which he learned during intensive studies of theology. If you wanted to have a conversation about faith, Jason was always eager and willing.

Jason’s final days were spent in the loving care of the nurses and CNA’s at Alma Nursing and Rehab. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the love, care and shared stories during his last 48 hours of life. Thank you for bringing joy by teasing and laughing with him and caring for his broken body. May he now “soar on wings of eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not be tired” Isaiah 40:31.

Jason is preceded in death by his father, Marvin, and his brother, Mark. Jason is survived by his mother, Linda Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, his siblings, Jeff Mumme of Fort Smith, AR and his sister Jennifer Mumme Bradt and her husband, Doug, of Frisco, TX, and his nieces and nephews, Jackson Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, Luke Mumme of Fayetteville, AR, Kenedy Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, Hannah Bradt Hedgpeth and her husband, Hunter, of Abilene, TX and Abby Bradt of College Station, TX.

A service of remembrance will be held at First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith, AR on Monday, June 17, 2024 at 10:30am under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. If you are unable to attend in person, a live stream is available on the Fort Smith First United Methodist Church Facebook page. In lieu of a visitation, the family will host a “gathering” in honor of Jason immediately following the service. Jason loved nothing more than food and fellowship so all are invited to join the family for lunch in the Family Life Center in celebration of Jason’s life and final wishes.
