The players, coaches and pundits have summed it up perfectly - an heroic defeat but a disappointing one nonetheless.
Wales battled courageously, at times playing with 12 men against the world champions, at high altitude, in their own back yard.
Dewi Lake's 77th-minute try while Wales had two players in the sin bin looked to have earned Wayne Pivac's side a memorable draw.
But Damian Willemse - arguably South Africa's best player on the day - held his nerve with the final kick to give the Springboks a win which will lift the whole nation.
The series is far from over and next week we head to Bloemfontein.
If that game is half of what we saw today we will be in for a cracker.

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac told Sky Sports: "It was a huge effort, but when you're down to 12 men against the world champs it is very difficult.
"The effort was huge, we were on the wrong side of the referee today and we will go away and look at the decisions and the cards.
"There were errors we made so they could build pressure too.
"It was a shame they got away with it at the end, because I would have taken a draw.
"It was a big step up form our last performance but the discipline is clearly disappointing.
"People will see we have put in a solid effort, people have opinions, what we need to do now is focus on the second Test and we look forward to it.
"I'm very proud but very disappointed, it is one that got away.
"We will roll our sleeves up and go again."

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi told Sky Sports: "It was tough out there as we predicted.
"They stopped our mauls and we couldn't get going, but the way we came back, that's what we take pride in.
"They came out guns blazing but I'm so proud.
"This is what we do it for, the country is going through so much, it seems every time we play something is happening.
"It doesn't take away the problems but it makes people feel like this.
"Wales knew what we wanted to do and they stopped that to start, we weren't kicking on our terms.
"So we had to find energy, the guys off the bench did that, we have so much respect for them and it is always difficult to play them."

Wales flanker Dan Lydiate told Sky Sports: "I'm gutted, there was a lot of momentum shifts in that game and we thought we nicked it but it wasn't to be.
"The atmosphere was amazing and it was a great Test match to play in.
"We were disappointed after the Six Nations and we wanted to put in a good performance today to restore pride in the jersey, but we came here to win and we're gutted with the result.
"We have to dust ourselves off and go harder next week.
"Discipline, we talked about it going into the camp, and we have to look at ourselves and rectify it for next week.
"But we have to give credit to South Africa though.
"It was a privilege to put the jersey on again, you always think it's your last time, so it was an honour."

I think that was Wales' best chance they're going to have to win in this series.
South Africa are going to get better and not play as poorly as they played today that's for certain.
That's really tough for Wales to take.

Wales will be feeling absolutely gutted. That was a phenomenal effort.
Nobody expected a result like that. They came so close and were within seconds of winning it.
It's going to be tough viewing on Monday for the boys and supporters but it was a fantastic effort from Wales.

We had to keep the ball with 25 seconds to go.

A Test match for the ages and South Africa win it with the final kick of the match.
The Springboks' penalty try with five minutes to play against 12-man Wales looked certain to win the game, but Dewi Lake's try drew the visitors level with three minutes left.
But it is late heartbreak for Wales - who suffer an 11th defeat in 11 games against South Africa in the Rainbow Nation - as Damian Willemse kept his composure to slot home the winning kick.
As defeats go, Wales can be mightily proud of their efforts in a game few gave them any chance of winning.

A questionable decision from the Springboks centre. Wales have 30 seconds to hold onto the ball.
Instead though Kieran Hardy kicks it deep into South African territory.
